5 Simple Health Tips For Touring Musicians

When I see an artist or music band perform on stage, I’m always in awe of their energy, passion and enthusiasm for what they do. Standing amidst hundreds and thousands of people, it feels like the cheering from the audience is what keeps them going. Well, in part it is. But there is a lot more to the life of an artist than the glamour, attention and adoration that they are constantly surrounded by.

Your body is your temple. And this belief is especially common among performers and singers since their bodies literally work like their instruments.

While being involved in this music fest, I actually came face-to-face with the reality of what it means to be an artist and performer. And I’m so full of respect for these people! I learnt that they may often need to catch early morning flights, stay up late for technical runs and sound checks, tour on the roads for days or weeks (even months!) and of course, perform on stage for hours together. Phew! It just sounds so hectic; yet, these people love what they do and it is this passion that keeps them going.

I’m a huge advocate of a healthy lifestyle and believe that good health can boost your performance and overall wellbeing. So, I have a few tips for our musician friends who need to sustain these high-energy routines:

Tip#1: Keep yourself hydrated

My number one tip to stay healthy and fit is to drink lots and lots of water. It will keep you hydrated and provide you with the necessary energy for all activities. Replace all those fizzy, sugary drinks with water. This is particularly important for singers as they need to take care of their voice chords. Avoid cold beverages and drink warm water instead.

Tip#2: Eat well

I know it’s not easy to eat nutritious and well-balanced meals when you’re touring and have limited resources at hand. But even then, try and get your hands on simple meals, comprising a good amount of protein and carbohydrates. Examples include dal chawal, paneer, chicken, roti, parathas and fresh fruits. Simple and easy-to-digest meals will give you the necessary fuel to put up a brilliant show. Also, don’t go without food for long hours. Keep snacking!

Tip#3: Practice some yoga asanas and meditation

It’s natural to feel stressed when living such a hectic lifestyle. And most artists tend to feel nervous before they go on stage, even if they have performed a hundred times before. Some meditation and yoga asanas could help you relax and feel more centered.

Simple breathing exercises (pranayama) such as anulom vilom may be a good start. You can slowly include asanas like Balasana or child pose, Makarasana or crocodile pose and Savasana or corpse pose in your daily routine. Stretching out is also an excellent way to rejuvenate!

Tip#4: Reduce smoking

I know this is a tough one but smoking is a killer. And for artists looking to prolong their shelf-life, quitting, or at least reducing exposure is a must. Start slow and cut down your per day cigarette count over a period of time. Try and avoid designated outdoor smoking areas as much as possible.

Tip#5: Get your sleep

An unpredictable schedule may leave little time for sleep. But you need to prioritize rest as it can make all the difference to your performance. Try and snooze in between rehearsals or during your road/flight travels. Sleep will play a huge role in keeping your energy supplies up and your mood swings in check!
